Ketner’s Mill Country Arts Fair

by Mr. Bang

We went to Ketner’s Mill while they were having an art festival.  It was fun.  I got a wood sample.  A guy was going to make an ice cream scoop out of it – the handle, anyway.  This video will explain why he gave it to me.

A couple runs a shop here called As the Wood Turns that sells pens, retractable magnets, ice cream scoops, letter openers, and other partially wooden objects.  The guy making the ice cream scoops had a machine that went through a hole in the middle of the handle.  Then he put it on the machine, and made it spin really fast in one direction.  He used a tool to put pressure on one point in the wood, which shaved part of it off.  Then he went over the entire thing a little bit.  In the video shown above, you will see what happened to the wood when he shaped it on the machine.  He had to stop making it because the side was rough, and he gave it to me.  Then he started on a new ice cream scoop handle.

I also saw some people that carved sculptures of eagles, Yoda, Darth Vader, creepy pumpkin faces, and baby bear cubs climbing on trees or just standing on their paws.  The bears were so cute!  Darth Vader was very hot, as you will see in this picture. The name of that shop was Carve Away Brays.

I want to tell you about two other vendors selling wooden things.  One of them makes 2-D sculptures, the other makes 3-D sculptures.  The first one carved eagles and things with small lines into the wood and probably dyed the wood different colors or he connected different parts of different trees together to make pictures.  There were wolves, eagles, a boy and his dog, a lion and a lamb, a teddy bear, a snow man, and a few other things.  The second sculptor fitted hundreds of little squares of wood together to make sculptures.  Some of them were curved; they were all shiny.  They fit together to make designs, as you will see.  IMG_3863IMG_3864IMG_3857IMG_3862IMG_3858

I like Ketner’s Mill.  My favorite part was As the Wood Turns.  The reason it was my favorite was because we actually got to watch him make some of the spoons.

  1. Wood turners can do amazing work using many different species of wood depending on what object they are turning. Very interesting to watch. Good description of the events.
