Warrior: Into The Wild by Erin Hunter is a really good book.  It is in the series “Warriors The Prophecies Begin.”  There are also Warriors: Dawn of the ClansWarriors: A Vision of Shadows, Warriors: The New Prophecy, Warriors: Power of Three, and Warriors: Omen of the Stars.  This series is about wild cats who are split up into 4 clans. Shadowclan is the bad clan – they start most of the fights, Riverclan tends to side with Shadowclan, Thunderclan and Windclan are the nicest clans, and Starclan is like cat heaven where the ancestors live and give the medicine cats and leaders signs. The dark forest is where all the bad cats go.

The book starts with two maps, the cat view and the two-leg/human view.  In the prologue there is a battle between Thunderclan and Riverclan.  This is how the book starts.

“A half-moon glowed on the  smooth granite boulders, turning them silver. The silence was broken only by the ripple of water from the swift black river and the whisper of the trees in the forest beyond.  There was a stirring in the shadows, and and from all around lithe dark shapes crept stealthily over the rocks. Unsheathed claws glinted in the moonlight.  Weary eyes flashed like amber. And then, as if on a silent signal, the creatures leaped on each other and suddenly the rocks were alive with  wrestling screeching cats.”

The cats fought for a time, then the Thunderclan deputy, Redtail, called a retreat.

Then we swich to the Thunderclan camp.  There was a sign from Starclan, “Only fire can save the clan”.

Then in the first chapter a cat named Rusty has a dream.  He is hunting a mouse but loses it.  Then we find out Rusty is a pet cat. Rusty went outside and was headed to the woods when he stopped to talk with a friend.  She said there are dangerous wildcats out there.  But Rusty still went and hunted a mouse ,then a cat attacked him and he fought back then the fight ended and they talked for a while.

It turns out Rusty was hunting in Thunderclan territory and the other cat’s name is Graypaw.  Then other cats came and talked as well.  The cats who came after Graypaw were Blustar the leader, and Lionheart.  Blustar said Rusty fought well for a kittypet/pet cat.  Blustar offered for Rusty to join Thunderclan.

Will Rusty accept, and live with cats he doesn’t know?  What will happen if he does?

This book and others in the series tell the story of Rusty and other cats as they fight to survive.  I love these books and can’t wait to read the rest.

  1. This sounds like a very interesting book! I just finished reading one about a warren of rabbits, called Watership Down. They had a couple of battles with cats. It would be interesting to read your series, to hear a (fictional, of course) cat’s perspective! 🙂
