I went to Jamestown Settlement. This is not the historical site of Jamestown. This is to show people what it was like.
We went to a temporary Pocahontas exhibit. There was a weaving thing like you see here. I had tons of fun playing with it. There were also books. One of them was a comic book. There was a commercial for a certain type of cleaning chemical that was for sinks, and Pocahontas had to clean a sink before she could save John Smith! [snicker, snicker, snicker]
We went to an English fort. It was cool, and cool as can be. I loved the English fort. There was one person teaching us about weapons. He explained that boys started fencing at six. They used wooden training swords. They used those so they wouldn’t cut themselves, cut a leg off while they’re fighting.
There was a surgeon. We spent a long time learning about surgery and the tools. If a soldier couldn’t go to the bathroom, then a surgeon would use an enema and put it in the part of the part of the body where stuff wouldn’t come out, and squirt it, and stuff would come out again. The surgeon didn’t have pain medication. It really hurt them and the surgeon just had to do whatever surgery as quick as he could.
I also tried on armor. It was fun, although it was too small for me. It felt uncomfortable. It was heavy, even though it was small.
We watched a musket firing. I loved it! There was a woman firing the guns, not very authentic, if you ask me.
I loved the two ships we got to go on, the Susan Constant and the Discovery. We went on the biggest ship and the littlest ship. They both had plenty of cannons. They had ginormous masts.
I also loved the Indian Village. There were several areas where you smashed corn. I personally loved going in and out of the yehakins, their houses. There were also people in costume teaching about how they lived life.
It was really neat seeing how the colonists and Native Americans lived. I’m also eager to go to the historic site to see where it happened. I’ve been there before but I want to go again.
