[Mr. Bang has been learning about the elements of a story: plot, setting, character, and conflict. The past few days we’ve been focusing on character, and today his assignment was to write a short story using two characters he had brainstormed about last week. He chose to create a story about two dogs that are a friend’s pets.]
Miles and Bubba, the cute little doggy-doggy, were out on an adventure away from the RV. When they were headed back, they saw about fifty coyotes blocking their way. Luckily, Miles had lived in the desert before he was a pet, three years ago. He’s immune to cacti, any kind. So he gathered any cacti spikes he could get and spit them out of his mouth, as long as they were straight. Luckily, he had good aim. He struck down 5 or 6 coyotes. But the two little doggies were outnumbered and Bubba got pricked by prickly pear – 5 spines – which Miles helped get out.
Then Miles built a fort out of barrel cacti, prickly pear, and any other cacti he could get his paws on. It held firm. He kept shooting them from the walls and out of the ceiling he had made of saguaro cacti. There were reinforcements of coyotes running into the fray. Some attacked while others called more meat-eating animals – any kind. There were hyenas, lions, tigers, cheetahs, and doggies.
Then something weird happened. The dogs started to attack the other animals using the same tactics as Miles did with and without the fort. Bubba was terrified. He crouched in the middle of the two-story fort. All together the bad animals rammed it, and one wall collapsed. Then Miles pulled Bubba up the ladder. He made a doggy bed out of things that wouldn’t prick him. They were on the roof of it, then one of the stories collapsed. Now they were on a one-story fort with no enemies around them, because they had been killed in the collapse.
Bubba crawled off and got 10 or 15 prickly pear spikes in him, 15 saguaro spikes, and 5 barrel cacti spikes. Miles couldn’t handle this so he carried him on his back and ran home as a cute little doggie-woggie should and got help.
The dogs’ owners helped get the spikes out of poor little Bubba. That was Miles and Bubba’s very non-eventful day.
